01, Design & Siting

Placing Water Where It Works

Where a feature sits decides whether you actually enjoy it. We site for sightlines from the patio and the house, for how far the sound should carry, and for practical realities: grade, sun, wind, splash, and access to power. Then we scale the feature so it fits the yard instead of dominating it, and looks deliberate from every angle you will actually see it.

02, Circulation Engineering

Pumps, Pipes & Flow Rates

Every feature is designed backwards from the water effect you want. A glassy sheet, a gentle trickle, or a full cascade each demands a specific flow rate over every inch of spill edge, and that dictates the pump, pipe diameter, and basin volume. We size all of it on paper before anything is dug, which is why our features sound right on the first fill.

03, Basins & Waterproofing

The Reservoir Nobody Sees

Under every pondless waterfall and water wall is a hidden reservoir that stores and recirculates the water. We build it with proper liners or precast basins, protect it from frost, and size it so the feature does not run dry on a hot week. Wired In Properly

Pumps and lighting run on dedicated GFCI-protected circuits installed to code, not an extension cord tucked behind a rock. We rough in power during excavation, and position low-voltage LED lighting inside and around the feature so it performs at night as well as it does at noon.

Backyard Waterfalls & Streams

A natural stone waterfall, with or without a winding stream, is the most organic feature you can add: water appearing out of the planting, breaking over weathered stone, and disappearing again. A water wall sheets water down stone, tile, or metal into a slim hidden trough: movement and sound in a vertical, architectural package. Pondless Waterfalls

All the sight and sound of a waterfall with no open pond: the water vanishes into a gravel-covered underground reservoir and recirculates. There is no standing water for small children to reach, no algae to fight, and minimal upkeep beyond top-ups and a seasonal cleanout. It is the feature we recommend most often to busy families across Mississauga and the GTA, and it winterizes more easily than any pond.

Design, Flow & Formal Quote

We design the feature to your property: scale, stone palette, the sound profile you want, and how it ties into the patio, pool, planting, and lighting around it. Circulation is engineered on paper first, pump sizing, pipe runs, basin volume, and power. The quote is fixed and itemized, so you know exactly what the finished feature includes.

Excavation, Plumbing & Circulation Build

We excavate the basin and feature footprint, then build the system nobody sees: the reservoir, liner or precast basin, plumbing runs sized for the designed flow, the pump vault, and the electrical rough-in. Everything below grade is placed with frost in mind, because in Ontario this stage decides whether the feature thrives or cracks.

Stone Setting & Finishing

This is where the feature becomes real. Natural stone is selected and set piece by piece to shape how the water actually falls, sheets, and sounds. Spill edges are levelled to the millimetre, lighting is positioned, and the surrounding grade, planting, and hardscape are blended in so the feature looks like it was always part of the yard.

Handoff, Startup & Winterization Guidance

We fill, balance, and tune the system with you there, adjusting flow until the sound and movement are right. You get a written guide to the simple seasonal routine: what the fall shutdown involves, how spring startup works, and what to watch through the summer. A new pool build where the clients wanted more than a flat waterline. We raised the far wall into a natural stone waterfall plumbed directly into the pool’s circulation, with underwater lighting behind the falls. The water runs whenever the pool does, the sound carries to the dining area without overwhelming conversation, and the feature winterizes with the pool in a single fall visit.

What Does a Custom Water Feature Cost in the GTA?

Most custom water features land between 5,000 and 40,000 dollars installed. Fountains and bubblers typically run 5,000 to 15,000, water walls 8,000 to 25,000, pondless waterfalls 7,000 to 20,000, and large natural stone waterfalls with streams 20,000 to 40,000 and up. The real cost drivers are scale, stone, pump and plumbing complexity, and integration with a pool or lighting. Be wary of quotes that are dramatically lower, the savings almost always come out of the basin, the pump, or the frost protection, which is exactly what keeps the feature alive.

Which Feature Suits Which Property?

Large or sloped yards suit natural waterfalls and streams. Modern homes and tight lots suit water walls. Front entries and small gardens suit fountains. Families who want sound without open water should build pondless. And if you have a pool, the highest-impact upgrade is usually a feature that spills into it. A good contractor starts from your space and habits, not from the product they prefer to sell.

What Maintenance Actually Involves

A properly built pondless feature or water wall needs water top-ups in hot weather, a pump basket or filter check every few weeks, and one thorough cleanout a season. Open ponds need more: skimming, plant care, and algae management. Whatever you build, insist on accessible pumps and a serviceable layout. Maintenance difficulty is decided at the design stage, not after.

Winterizing a Water Feature in Ontario

Every feature here needs a fall shutdown before hard frost: the system is drained or blown down, the pump is removed or protected according to its rating, and exposed lines are cleared so trapped water cannot freeze and split them. On our builds this is an hour or two of documented routine each November. Skipping it is the single most expensive mistake a water feature owner can make.

Spring Startup, Done Right

In April or May the feature gets a cleanout: debris removed from the basin, the pump reinstalled and primed, the system refilled and brought up slowly while flow and connections are checked. Done properly, startup takes an afternoon and the feature runs trouble-free all season. It is also the right moment to check lighting and top up the gravel over the reservoir.

Why Cheap Kits Fail Here

Big-box kits are designed for mild climates: shallow basins that freeze solid, undersized pumps that clog and burn out, and thin liners that tear under frost heave. They look plausible in September and fail by the second spring. A custom feature costs more up front because it contains the engineering the kit leaves out, and it is still cheaper than building twice.

Pumps, Power & Running Costs

Modern energy-efficient pumps draw far less than most people fear. A typical mid-size feature costs a few dollars a week to run, and it only runs when you want it to. Power comes from a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit installed to code, and lighting is low-voltage LED. We size the pump to the feature rather than oversizing it, which keeps both the sound and the hydro bill where they should be.
