Most inground pools in the GTA are fibreglass shells: a factory-moulded shape delivered on a truck and set into the ground. That is a genuinely good product, we install them ourselves through our fibreglass pool installation service, but a shell can only ever be the shape and size the mould allows. If your yard is unusual, your vision is specific, or you want a spa, tanning ledge, or infinity edge built into the pool itself, the mould becomes the limit.
A concrete pool has no mould. It is engineered and built in place: excavated to your profile, formed with a tied steel cage, plumbed for every feature, and shot with concrete into one monolithic shell. 02, Engineering & Permits

03, Excavation

04, Steel & Plumbing
A cage of tied reinforcing steel is built to the engineer's spec, sized for our soils and frost loads. 05, Shotcrete Shell
Concrete is pneumatically shot over the steel cage, shaped by hand, and cured properly, a wet cure over days, not hours. The result is a single monolithic shell with no panels, seams, or liner: the structural heart of the pool and the reason concrete outlasts every other construction method.
06, Tile, Coping & Interior Finish
Waterline tile, natural stone or precast coping, and the interior finish, plaster, or an exposed aggregate finish in your chosen colour and texture, are what give a concrete pool its character. This is where your pool stops looking like a structure and starts looking like yours.
07, Decking, Equipment & Startup

A steel or polymer wall kit with a poured floor and a fitted vinyl liner. It is the lowest upfront cost way into an inground pool and shapes are reasonably flexible. The liner itself is the weak point: it typically needs replacing every 8 to 12 years at meaningful cost, it can tear, and built-in features are limited. Over 30 years, liner replacements close much of the price gap with better construction.

A basic rectangle with modest decking sits near the bottom; a resort-style build with a spa, water features, and a large stone surround sits at or beyond the top. Be wary of a concrete pool quote that looks close to fibreglass money, the difference usually comes out of the steel, the shell, or the groundwork, which is exactly where it cannot.
Plan on 8 to 14 weeks of construction from excavation to swim-ready: roughly a week of digging, one to two weeks of steel and plumbing, the shotcrete shell and its curing period, several weeks of tile, coping, and decking, then interior finish, fill, and startup. Complex designs run longer. Before any of that, engineering and permits typically add 4 to 8 weeks of lead time, so families who want to swim in July are usually signing in winter or early spring.
Every inground concrete pool in Ontario needs a building permit backed by engineered structural drawings, plus utility locates before excavation. On top of that, each GTA municipality enforces a pool enclosure bylaw: fencing of a minimum height, self-closing and self-latching gates, and rules about when the enclosure must be complete. Mississauga, Toronto, Oakville, and Vaughan all differ in the details. We handle the drawings, applications, and inspections as part of every project.
You will see both terms in quotes, and they are nearly the same thing: concrete applied pneumatically over a steel cage. Gunite is a dry mix that gets water at the nozzle; wet-mix shotcrete arrives ready-mixed and is shot in place. Both produce an excellent monolithic shell when applied by a skilled crew, and crew skill, steel spec, and curing matter far more than which term is on the paperwork. If a contractor cannot explain their shell thickness and curing process, that is the red flag, not the word they use.
A properly engineered shell will not fail from freeze-thaw. The steel cage carries the tension loads, the shell thickness is designed for our frost and soil pressures, and correct fall winterization, lowering the water, blowing out and plugging the lines, protects the plumbing. Hairline surface crazing in the interior finish is cosmetic and normal over decades; structural cracking almost always traces to thin shells, light steel, or poor groundwork. This is why the invisible half of the build is the half worth paying for.
A concrete pool asks slightly more of you than fibreglass: the interior finish is mildly porous, so water chemistry needs consistent attention, and the surface benefits from regular brushing. Interior finishes last roughly 15 to 25 years before a refresh, and resurfacing an existing shell is a well-established, far cheaper job than a new pool. In exchange you get a structure that outlasts every alternative and can be retiled, refinished, or updated for generations.
The most common planning mistake we see is budgeting for the pool alone. The decking, steps, lighting, fencing, and landscaping around it are what turn a hole full of water into the backyard you imagined, and on many projects the surround is a third or more of the total investment. Because we build both the pool and the hardscaping, we design and price the complete space from the start, so there is no expensive surprise waiting after the shell is in the ground.
